OnLive have released a new update to its Android and iOS app which allows PC-quality high-definition gameplay to a very wide range of smartphones, tablets and media players. This includes the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Kindle Fire.

The app is available on Thursday, December 8 and will add complete gameplay support for any game offered through the OnLive service, which includes some of the latest AAA games on the market right now such as Batman: Arkham City, L.A. Noire, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and more.

The previous version of the OnLive app only allowed users to use the OnLive marketplace and access the social features of the service, but after tomorrow, you'll be able to play any game as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi, and if not, it'll also work over 3G and 4G LTE connections with a minimum speed of just 1Mbps.

If you'd like to tap some of those sweet, sweet HD resolutions, OnLive recommend connection speeds of between 3 and 5Mbps. OnLive have adapted over 25 titles to support a new on-screen overlay that replicates the analog sticks and buttons that you'd find on a controller. There are a number of big titles that OnLive have built this support into such as DiRT 3, Virtua Tennis 2009, Lara Croft and the Guardians of Light and more.

OnLive have also partnered up with publishers to bring native touchscreen controls to the OnLive versions of their games. At first, just five titles will be adapted for mobile controls, including L.A. Noire. Unlike the OnLive-produced overlap used in other titles, Rockstar is custom tailoring the version of L.A. Noire available on the service to support gesture-based controls, on-screen cues and more. For example, when investigating a crime scene, users can swipe across the screen to rotate bodies and tap to pick up objects.

But, what of those who don't want to use a touchscreen and like to get their hands dirty with a controller? You won't miss out, either. OnLive have produced a new Universal Controller that pairs over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless standards to your smartphone or tablet. When used on an iOS or Android-powered device running the OnLive app, the Universal Controller provides complete dual analog controls, triggers, and actions buttons with low-latency performance.

The controller doubles as a standard controller that can be used on the Xbox 360, PC, PS3, Mac, or OnLive's MicroConsole using a USB dongle. Up to four Universal Controllers can be paired with a single USB transmitter.

OnLive's app is free and should hit the Android Market and iTunes App Store tomorrow. Users can order the Universal Controller for just $49.99.
