PlayStation 4 'Orbis' may also sport dual GPUs

By: (more) | Gaming News | Posted: Apr 5, 2012 1:15 am

Last week we posted a RumorTT on the upcoming next-generation PlayStation 4 'Orbis' console, we heard the PlayStation 4 would sport a 64-bit, x86-based AMD processor, as well as an AMD Radeon-branded GPU based on the 7700-series or higher from the Southern Islands family.

According to some news from IGN, and one of their sources who talk of the "official product specs", we should expect an AMD A8-3850 which features a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated graphics chip (APU). This APU will also work in tandem with the PS4's dedicated GPU, which should be a HD7670, which should be clocked at 1GHz and [only] have 1GB of dedicated VRAM. Considering that the HD 7670 is a rebranded HD 6670, which is based on AMD's 40nm "Turks" GPU.

This means it won't sport any of the luscious features that Graphics CoreNext offers, not does it sport the VLIW4 tech, but instead, VLIW5 machinery. With these two graphics technologies working in tandem, we can expect it to be called a "Radeon HD 6690D2". We should expect more news as it comes, but just 1GB of dedicated VRAM? I'm quite disappointed if that's true.
