Samsung helps boost Android to 68.1% of smartphone market in latest IDC figures

Android saw more than a 15 percent increase in market share from last quarter to this quarter. That means that nearly 68.1 percent of smartphones shipped in the second quarter were powered by Android, an increase that is mostly attributed to the Korean manufacturer Samsung. Samsung shipped more Android phones during the quarter than the next seven manufacturers combined.

Samsung's incredible performance has cut into iOS' market share pretty significantly, dropping it from 23 percent to 16.9 percent over the same time period. Of course, where there are gains for Android and iOS, there are losses for the other operating systems. Blackberry managed third place with just 4.8 percent of shipping devices.

Symbian is doing even worse, dropping from 16.9 percent last year to only 4.4 percent this year. That equates to nearly a 75 percent drop. Windows Phone is still performing quite badly with only 3.5 percent. It would appear Nokia's Lumia line of phones have failed to stimulate any massive interest in the platform.
