Kim Dotcom promises that Megabox will launch this year

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: Aug 13, 2012 5:26 am

It looks as though the MegaUpload problems aren't stopping founder Kim Dotcom from getting right back into work, with the biggest hint that his new music program has not been delayed and will arrived later this year. The new hint comes from a tweet from the man himself, and is talking about Megabox.

I'm sure you've heard of it, but if you haven't, Megabox will be a music service that allows artists to sell music directly to its users. The last time Dotcom talked of Megabox was back in June, where he told Torrent Freak that:

You can expect several Megabox announcements [in 2012] including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models.

But, with this latest tweet, we can pretty much be guaranteed we'll see Megabox land this year. During a guest post for Torrent Freak, Dotcom described the aims of Megabox in his own words, where he's said it's going to be a disruptive music service, and will anger those within the industry itself:

UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings.

We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free. Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works. You can expect several Megabox announcements next year including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models.
