Dolby Surround on the Cheap

By: (more) | Posted: Nov 9, 2002 4:54 am

You may remember last week that Dolby Labs announced it's new Dolby Virtual Speaker technology which offers conventional Dolby surround sound from just two speakers. I wouldn't say it would be out of the realm of possibility, since Dolby already have surround sound headphones on the market, and have so for at least two years.

The folks over at Digital Silence spent a few minutes asking James Joseph Arnold, Director of Public Relations for Dolby Labs, a few questions about the interesting new technology.

Dolby Virtual Speaker technology is a proprietary process that can be included in a wide variety of products (such as DVD players, TV sets, PCs, personal speaker systems, and home theater systems) to provide a true-to-life 5.1 surround-sound experience with just two speakers. Working in conjunction with Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding, it enhances the playback of any program material, from 5.1-channel DVDs and satellite programming to stereo music CDs and MP3 files.
