Hyper-Threading on 2.4B Pentium 4 - ahem?

By: (more) | Posted: Nov 13, 2002 7:24 pm

As I put the final touches on our Pentium 4 3.06GHz processor review with official Hyper-Threading support, I was slightly shocked when I noticed the folks from VR-Zone Hardware managed to enable Hyper-Threading on an older 2.4B processor through the BIOS of an Iwill 845PE based motherboard. This suggests Hyper-Threading has been available for sometime now in many Northwood Pentium 4 cores but Intel has opted to wait to officially launch it with its new 3.06GHz processor, later on today.

Just one day before launch of Intel fastest 3.06Ghz Pentium 4, RiStaR has managed to turn on the Hyper-Threading function by chance on the older Pentium 4 2.4B using the IWILL P4HT-S 845PE board. This has proven that Hyper-Threading was already present in the Northwood just that it has been disabled by the BIOS. There should be some tricks to enable HT in the BIOS even it is not a 3.06Ghz P4.
