Wii U consoles won't have the massive day-one update factory installed until 2013

Anyone who purchased the Wii U at launch or followed the launch via TweakTown or another source should know that users face a large update as soon as they plug their console in. Worse yet, if power is lost during the three-plus hour update, the console can be bricked and will have to be returned to Nintendo.

Sadly, this is a fact of life that will remain for at least another month. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that it will be a few months before the update is factory installed.

"Nintendo developers want to make sure that the very best product is available to consumers," Fils-Aime said in the interview. "That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible. That's why the system update was required on Day One - and this is quite similar to what's happened with other consumer electronic products."

If you have a slow internet connection, unstable power, or a limited data plan, you might think about holding off on purchasing the Wii U until sometime into 2013 to avoid having to download and install this update.
