Say 'hello' to Poke, Facebook's new app that is set to compete with Snapchat

By: (more) | Apps News | Posted: Dec 21, 2012 9:16 pm

Facebook has released a new app today. Poke is a new app that is designed to directly compete in Snapchat territory. The new app allows content to be shared between users with it disappearing after a short period of time. Poke supports everything Snapchat does: photos, videos, and text can all be sent.

With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo, or video to Facebook friends to share what you're up to in a lightweight way. You can poke an individual friend or several at once. Each message expires after a specific time you've set, either 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. When time runs out, the message disappears from the app.

In other words, the app functions nearly identically to Snapchat. It's not clear if the data is deleted off of Facebook's servers. Snapchat deletes any data transmitted through its servers, so it truly is a self-destructing message. Also not clear is if the app warns you when a chatting partner takes a screenshot, something Snapchat does.

You can pick up the app in the iOS App Store.
