An Amazon customer is claiming the online retail giant sold him an iPhone 5 that was stolen merchandise. Ben Dreyfuss is claiming to have received a stolen iPhone which he purchased for his mother.

The phone was discovered to be hot when Dreyfuss' mother tried to activate the phone with Verizon. A represenative informed her that the phone had been blacklisted due to theft.

Dreyfuss tweeted that the iPhone in question had been listed on Amazon's warehouse deals section as Refurbished. He claimed that it originally was an Amazon Trade-in, which would mean that someone stole the phone and Amazon acquired it through a buyback program. Amazon has instructed Dreyfuss to return the phone and has apologized for the mix up.
