Samsung shows off flexible OLED phone prototype

By: (more) | Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones News | Posted: Jan 10, 2013 10:11 am

CES 2013 - We've heard about Samsung's flexible OLED displays before, but it looks like CES 2013 was the time to show them off. The Verge have had some hands-on time with the flexible device, which is a "nameless prototype".

The screen on this nameless prototype curves at the rear edge of the device, with The Verge reporting that Samsung don't quite know what to do with the extra screen real estate. The current prototype shows landscape-oriented notifications along its edge. This would allow users to read text messages, stock tickers and other notifications from the side of the device, even if the phone is covered up by a case.

Specifications were light on the device, but the screen size should be around 5 inches with a resolution of "about" 720p. Samsung told The Verge that the device they were playing with wasn't in fact a phone as it was missing a radio, operating system, camera and most other required features to make it a phone.

The prototype in question is pretty much just a touch-capable digital picture frame, pushing an image out to a mocked-up UI.
