A new study has revealed that smartphones have for the first time topped the data consumption charts. In a study conducted by mobile analytics firm Arieso, smartphone users now "consistently consume" more mobile data than tablet users.

Apple's iPhone 5 tops out the list of "hungriest" data consumers, who actually demand 50% more data than iPhone 4S users and four times the data than iPhone 3G users. Samsung Galaxy S III users however, generate more upload data than all iOS-based phones.

Overall, mobile data usage is through the roof, and is growing exponentially, with new devices being activated every day. LTE networks are beginning to bear some of the load, but we are still far off from a true nation-wide LTE network in the United States.
