Bomb threat in Sydney

By: (more) | Posted: Sep 23, 2001 9:15 am

Cameron Johnson (Sov) and I decided we would go see a movie in George Street Sydney today at the Hoyts cinemas. We were half way through the movie when the screen faded and a guy came down saying... "There is a problem in the movie complex, please leave the building and do as the police say..." So we all left, we all first thought it was a fire in the building. But, Sov was told it was a bomb threat in the building - This was when I did find myself a bit scared, so I rang mum and dad and told them what was going on just in case something did happen. At the time all I could think of was New York and what's been happening lately with the terrorist attacks.

Anyway, after we get got out of the movie complex we ended up being taken to George street (near the Planet Hollywood) and there we saw news crews and helicopters, already, around the place, even before we got there, odd I'd say. We were told by fire fighters that they found a package in the Mc Donalds opposite the movie complex, mind you there was (well still is) a huge massive building next to the Mc Donalds... The thing is the package had "NYC" labelled on it! Anyway Sov and I hung around for an hour or so talking to everyone in the street about what happened, with the odd NYC joke which couldn't really be helped at the time, everyone was calm so it was all ok.

Sov and I decided it was time to leave... Except there were no trains running, so I had to get a taxi back to where I am now, near John Howards place... After almost getting ran over by a car, Hehe. that's all I know it this stage, the "bomb" was still in the building when we left and I haven't heard any reports on the TV as yet. Some excitement for the day nevertheless!
