Seagate Launches Launches High Capacity 5400.3 Hard Drives

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Jan 16, 2006 10:15 pm

Today marks the official launch of the first member to Seagate's new "Momentus" series of 2.5" notebook hard drives, a whopping 160GB model operating at 5400.3RPM.

How'd they manage to give a 2.5" HDD so much storage capacity? Magic! - Well, not quite magic, but this new "perpendicular recording" technology which has only just surfaced in the hard drive world recently has to be the next best thing, allowing for a more efficient and condensed way to store information on the platters, which means larger hard drives for us!

DailyTech have all the details.

Seagate achieves the Momentus' capacity breakthrough by using a method of recording bits called perpendicular recording. Traditionally, data is recorded onto a hard drive's platter by arranging magnetic bits horizontally -- or parallel -- to the surface of the platter. This method has been successful for quite some time, giving us desktop capacities that range from 400GB to 500GB on standard 3.5" hard drives. However, at those capacities, data integrity becomes an issue.
