Shamino gives the HD 3870 a boost

By: (more) | Posted: Dec 10, 2007 11:37 pm

Shamino is under the limelight once again with his latest overclocking adventures; this time he's looked into modifying the power circuitry of the new Radeon HD 3870 graphics card so that he can push the core clockspeed through the roof and see what potential lurks within the design of the HD 2900 XT successor.

And sure enough he's pulled it off, managing to get the core stable at an incredible 1.2GHz clockspeed. You can view details of his achievement in this thread on the FOXCONN forums; and if you happen to own one of these new cards and arn't scared of pulling out the soldering iron and doing some volt modding, Shamino has kindly explained exactly what to do in order to take your clockspeeds to new heights as well.

Thanks to NordicHardware for the heads up.

Radeon HD 3870 has not really been able to shoulder the benchmarking success of the Radeon 2900 XT. Even though the 2900 XT was more or less a disappointment to many, it has been fairly popular among the top benchers. In fact, the card is found at the top of the 3D charts and outperforming GeForce 8800 Ultra there, at half the price.
