NVIDIA decides to take up DX 10.1 challenge

By: (more) | Posted: Jul 3, 2008 5:52 pm

Apparently, having taken the lack of DirectX 10.1 API support in its current GPU line-up to heart, sources of TG Daily have provided information, in the form of a presentation slide, indicating that NVIDIA plans to play 'catch-up' by, incorporating DirectX 10.1 support into its next generation GPUs.

Whilst TG Daily, honourably protecting the identity of their source, is unable to share the presentation slide in question, it is suggested that not only could NVIDIA's next generation desktop GPU solutions be enhanced with DirectX 10.1 support, but that also notebook solutions won't be left out in the cold.

On the desktop front, the successor to NVIDIA's GT200, is expected to see the light of day in late Q4 2008 or, within the first quarter of 2009, according to the report. NVIDIA's next generation notebook solution, on the other hand, is expected to launch next spring.

At this time, it is rumoured that NVIDIA's GT200 successor will boast 1.5 to 2 times the speed of current technology offerings, however AMD isn't likely to rest on its laurels and has the, perceived advantage of, DirectX 10.1 API support now, with a clear and convincing head start.

Apparently, NVIDIA will also adopt GDDR5 memory, perhaps as soon as Q4 2008, subject to increased module availability. We would surmise that a GT200 refresh would probably be the first NVIDIA solution offering GDDR5, perhaps to test the waters.
