Citing its sources as notebook manufacturers, this report from DIGITIMES, explores the possibility of Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, not reaching mobile shores until Q3 2009.
Calpella, which will succeed the very recent Centrino 2 (Montevina) platform, is the sixth generation of Intel's Centrino vision and, will usher in some fundamental changes to boot.
Typical Northbridge components, together with the DDR3 memory controller, will form part of the CPU itself, whilst a chipset codenamed Ibex Peak-M, will take over the duties for remaining functionality. This results in Calpella, effectively, annulling the Northbridge/Southbridge marriage, following in the steps of its desktop sibling, the X58 Tylersburg.
Calpella will form the foundations for Intel's future Clarksfield (Quad Core) and Auburndale (Dual Core), CPUs. Both derived from Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, it is expected that the company will also take matters a step further, by integrating graphics functionality into the Auburndale CPU itself.
Codenamed Puma Peak and Kilmer Peak, respectively, Wireless Internet support will come courtesy of either, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, or WiMAX 802.16, wireless modules.
Regardless of the wait involved, it certainly appears that some of the key benefits expected from Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, will go a long way to enliven and enrich the mobile experience.
