Opera to introduce web solutions for e-readers and tablets at Computex 2010

Taipei, Taiwan - May 24, 2010

While the proliferation of new screens on more devices presents exciting opportunities for OEMs and gives operators options to add devices and services to their existing portfolios, Opera Software, the only cross-platform, cross-device browser company, introduces web solution for e-readers and tablets. The company will also exhibit its latest full web-standards-based web solutions for connected devices during Computex, June 1-5, 2010, in Taipei, Taiwan.

Industry analysts have predicted that 2010 will be an explosive year for the mobile Internet devices. With multiple new e-reader devices and tablets being introduced, the market will be highly competitive. To have the content more viable for users to consume, the publishers intend to distribute their content through different platforms and devices. It is possible that more and more books and content available on standards-compatible, open platforms will be accessible across multiple devices. The web can act as the platform of choice, allowing access to content, the app stores and a whole host of apps on e-readers across devices and operating systems. The web browser is the key technology for these mobile Internet device owners to explore and access the web.

"The Opera browser engine supports various cross-platforms required to enable a competitive e-reader and tablet solution," said Rolf Assev, Chief Strategy Officer, Opera Software. "To be able to adapt to changes in technology and standards, OEMs that manufacture many different kinds of devices will be able to take advantage of the platform-independent, cross-device capabilities of the Opera browser engine."

The web solutions for e-readers and tablets are powered by the Opera Devices SDK and Opera for tablets. Opera Devices SDK allows e-reader OEMs to develop custom browsers based on the latest Opera Presto rendering engine that powers Opera's range of browsers. Browsers based on the Opera Devices SDK are market-proven, expandable and have also been already deployed on a wide range of products such as TVs, games consoles, media players, and more. Opera for tablets provides a touch-optimized tablet browser user interface and out-of-the-box productive quality on Android and Windows CE. It also has the web-application platform, such as the end-to-end widget solution, the W3C-compliant widgets, the application store and the developer community.

Come see our latest, ready-to-market Opera Web solution at the Computex exhibit (Hall 1, D205). The participants will able to experience Opera on a variety of devices: Opera Widgets on the Orange Tabbee 7-inch Wi-Fi Internet tablet and the Intel CE3100 chipset for TV; Opera Devices on Nintendo DSi XL; Opera Mobile on smartphones such as HTC HD2, Samsung Instinct HD, Google Nexus One and more.

Finally, stay tuned for learning more views about the power of connecting. Rolf Assev will deliver a keynote address at the e21 FORUM, organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA). The forum will feature opinion leaders in the IT industry to unveil the most important trends and technology at Computex.
