Razer's new Project Linda is a phone-laptop hybrid

By: Derek Strickland | More News: Laptops | Posted: 1 week, 4 days ago

CES 2018 - Razer has revealed a very strange mix of laptop and mobile phone hardware in a bid to utilize its new Razer Phone.

Project Linda is quite...weird. The device is essentially a 13.3-inch laptop that somewhat follows Nintendo's playbook with the Switch dock; instead of a tablet, users dock their Razer Phone into the Project Linda laptop for Android-powered gaming. The device is clearly aimed at the massively popular smartphone gaming market, and aligns with Razer's coin-based microtransaction business, especially in regions like China that embrace both mobile and browser-based gaming.

"Razer's Project Linda laptop seamlessly docks the Razer Phone inside its chassis where a touchpad would normally reside, and connects with the press of a button. The phone's Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform and 8 GB of RAM deliver responsive performance, instantly transforming Project Linda into an Android laptop," reads a press release from Razer. "The Razer Phone 5.7-inch display can be used as a touchpad, or as a second screen for access to apps, tools, and more."

It's a novel idea, and it'll be interesting to see how the hybrid actually fares in the real-world of gaming where players will blast through games for hours at a time.

Dell's new XPS 13: permanent marker can be wiped off surface

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Laptops | Posted: 1 week, 6 days ago

CES 2018 - Dell has unveiled its new Dell XPS 13, with the new 2-in-1 refresh packing the latest 8th-gen Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processor options, arriving in both 1080p and 4K display options.

Dell's new XPS 13 laptop strips both USB 3.0 ports by switching to USB-C, packing three USB-C ports while getting rid of the normal sized SD card reader and replacing it with a not-so-useful microSD card reader.

There have been some tweaks to the carbon fiber material used on the refreshed XPS 13, with Dell making the white palm rest with a woven texture that looks "kind of cheap in person" according to The Verge. The material reportedly gets super dirty, and while Dell knows about this, the company says that it can be easily cleaned.

Keylogger found planted on over 460 HP laptops

By: Jak Connor | More News: Laptops | Posted: Dec 12, 2017 1:09 pm

Security researcher ZwClose has found that HP have pre-installed a keylogger into different models of their laptops, with over 460 different models affected.

This keylogger installed by HP allows for hackers to record every key stroke made on your laptops keyboard, essentially giving the open opportunity for passwords, credit card details and any personal account information to be stolen.

Courtesy of ZwClose we now know that the file is embedded in the SynTP.sys which is apart of the Synaptics touchpad driver which ships with standard HP notebook computers.

Google Pixelbook: Surface competitor starts at $1199

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Laptops | Posted: Sep 20, 2017 5:31 am

Google has a media event on October 4 where we should see the next-gen Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones, but it seems like we might be getting a peak at their upcoming Chromebook Pixel successor, something teased now as Google Pixelbook.

Pixelbook is an official name, with Google seemingly adopting the Pixel branding in a big way, with a few different variants of Pixelbook to be made available. This is what we should expect:

  • Pixelbook 128GB: $1199
  • Pixelbook 256GB: $1399
  • Pixelbook 512GB: $1749

Google's previous-gen Pixel laptops were just that... laptops, they didn't fold into a tablet like Pixelbook does. This allows Pixelbook to compete directly against Microsoft and their increasingly popular Surface and Surface Book line of products. Pulling Google into the same line as Microsoft, the new Pixelbook laptop has an optional Pixelbook Pen which is $99.

The Pixelbook Pen is pressure sensitive, with tilt support and supposedly no lag. If Google can pull this off, the $1199 and $1399 models of Pixelbook are going to be incredibly popular. The price will pull all-Google users in, which there are hundreds of millions of, and yet another release in their Pixel range of products.

Xiaomi's new Mi Notebook Pro rocks a 15.6-inch 1080p display with Corning's Gorilla Glass tech, with configurations available with up to the Intel Core i7-8550U processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 256GB PCIe-based SSD. Inside, we can expect NVIDIA's GeForce MX 150 graphics as standard, 2 x USB Type-C ports, 2 x USB 3.0 ports, a full-sized HDMI port, 3-in-1 SD card reader, and the courageous 3.5mm headphone jack.

Xiaomi also includes a large glass touchpad with a built-in fingerprint sensor, dual Harmon Infinity speakers, a full-size backlit keyboard with 1.5mm key travel, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 tech.
